According to the promotion details and firsthand information from an original owner, each Ford Dealership in the Pacific Northwest was to receive one Gold Nugget Special and the first person who came in wanting to buy it was the lucky person. It was sold with a custom commemorative dash plaque with the original purchaser's name and a simulated gold nugget affixed. All of the Gold Nugget Mustangs were only available in the Coupe model, with Sunlit Gold exterior paint, hood blackout stripes, and a black vinyl top with either black or nugget gold interior. They were produced with varying combinations of engines, transmissions and other available options.
